The great northern territory of Asturias in Spain, which is famous for its Celtic culture and cuisine, has a pivotal place on the northern route and history of the Camino de Santiago. As an ancient kingdom, its history stretches back about 1500 years, with many millenia more of human settlement and habitation before that. Celtic tribes dominated the area before the Romans arrived, and you can see various ancient ruins and monuments related to the two cultures.
Food and the Camino
You will eat well in the local bars and restaurants, and the local speciality of cachopo is a good recommendation for hungry travellers, especially if you have been doing a day of walking on the northern route of the historic Camino, and the local cider of Asturias is also famous.
Geography
The region of Asturias contains the cities of Oviedo and Gijón and high mountains cover the area. On the coast, you have rugged shorelines, where there are many enchanting villages which attract various visitors, such as surfers and adventure sports lovers, cyclists and beachgoers.
Getting there
Travellers can get there by air to Oviedo Airport. The airport is in fact closer to the town of Ávila, and there is a train line which crosses the north of Spain and passes through the area. There are also bus and coach services cris-crossing Asturias. It also neighbours the territory of Galicia to the west, which has air access in its cities of Vigo, La Coruña and Santiago de Compostella, and Cantabria to the east, which has an airport close to its city of Santander.
