Scotland

Scotland is an exceptionally scenic place with a warm culture of hospitality. It is a vast place with several distinct areas, ranging from the southern lowlands close to the border with England to the urban central belt which contains the biggest cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Highlands are to the north and the islands lie just on the west coast and also far to the north. 

Scenic Beauty

Scotland's world famous HIghlands, the mountain ranges that lie to the north and incorporatw the Hebridean islands on the west coast, offer scenic hiking tours. The Hebrides offer beautiful views of the wild north Atlantic Ocean, whereas the cities even have their own distinct scenery, especially Edinburgh with its architecture which is built around the city's volcanic geography. 

Culture, History and Heritage

Scotland's culture comprises of several distinct historical groups, including the Pictish culture which helped define the shape of the modern nation with their resistance to Roman rule, to the Irish Gaelic culture of the west and the establisment of the Vikings on the northern and western islands, creating strong links with the Kingdom of Norway. Later, the kings of Scotland forged alliances with the crown of France, and much of the history of these royal links can be seen around the country. 

The country, especially the islands of the Hebrides, is world-famous for whisky production, particularly the island of Islay.

Hospitable Locals

The local folk, both urban and rural, are warm and welcoming, and you will see this in the bar culture of Scotland. 

Traditional Music and Dance

Scotland has a traditional and folk music scene that rivals, and sometimes overlaps with, the Irish music scene. This is mixed with Scotland's traditional dance and its distinctive traditional dress style which has influenced modern fashion. 

Culinary Distinctiveness

You must try haggis and neeps when you are there! This is a sheep dish of mince combined with toasted oatmeal, onions, suet, and a rich blend of spices. It is served with tatties and neeps, which are potstoes and turnips, and is served on Scotland's national festival, Burn's Night, in honour of the country's famous bard. 

Scotland retains its own distinct style, which includes quality beef and seafood from the Atlantic. It also has a few strange concoctions which include deep-fried chocolate, pizza and even ice cream! 

Outdoor Activities

Hiking along scenic mountain trails, exploring the ancient ruins and more recent gardens of Edinburgh, playing golf in the country where the sport was invented are just some of the activities you can get  up to in Scotland. There are even ski stations in the north, so you have plenty to choose from. 

Festivals and Events

As we mentioned before, January 25th is the date of Burn's NIght, the festival in honour the the great Bard, Robert Burns. Edinburgh's world-famous fringe festival runs through August and the new year Hogmanay celebrations are an experience to behold! 

Historical Sites

Scotland, given its various historical peoples and how they came together, or not, offers many sites of interest for visitors, both in the cities and countryside. Its museums also contain many artefacts from the various stages of the nation's long history. 

Folk Tales and Legends

The Scots are well able to tell a tale, and there is a rich folk storytelling tradition in the country. 

Rest and Relaxation

Scotland is a mixture of urban and rural, and while you will find yourself very relaxed outside of the cities, the urban areas themselves have large parks and public gardens where you can successfully unwind.
