A series of articles on the city of Bilbao and its surroundings in the wider Basque Country. We have ideas for activities and information for visitors. We present a few options for tourists or those who might want to stay for a longer period.

Bilbao

Bilbao is an ancient city with 700 years of history. However, it is unique in that its ancient history blends in really well with its post-industrial architecture. There is a lot of art and repurposed architecture around the place, so it feels layered with history. The city is sporting-mad, with the local football team, Athletic Bilbao, ever-present. Basketball and local sports are also popular. There are lots of areas and activities for a bit of ordinary exercise too. The city also spoils you for choice whenever you are eating and drinking.

Basque Country

The Basque Country has a history of over seven centuries in a land with the ancient language of Euskera. Euskera is more than 5,000 years old and has no relation to any Indo-European language. Unconquered by the Romans or Charlemagne, Euskadi’s culture spans from the ancient world until now. It has the best of beaches and world-championship surfing areas. There are also green mountains and forests, and it produces various wines and craft beers.

Beyond

The Basque Country also has some lovely neighbouring areas. You have Cantabria in the west, with its capital, Santander. To the south is La Rioja and Ribera de Duero, which produce famous wines. From the east, the Pyrenees finish in the Basque Country. Northward is Landes, a scenic area of France. You are in a great spot for a diverse trip.
